Mezzo-soprano Cara Search sings, improvises, composes game music, and creates interdisciplinary theater in New York City.

The music I like to sing is contemporary art made into sound.

I collaborate and perform with interdisciplinary artists.

I compose and perform improvisation games for players of all levels.

Mezzo-soprano Cara Search sings, improvises, composes game music, and creates interdisciplinary theater in New York City.

This season (2018-19), Cara looks forward to exciting projects in New York City and abroad, and to hearing her first commissioned game piece, RESIST!!!, played by the Detroit-based ensemble Juxtatonal. Alongside singing engagements with Fresh Squeezed Opera and Os Ensemble, she will sing acclaimed Scottish composer Ailie Robertson's forthcoming opera based on Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s chilling short story, The Yellow Wallpaper

Last season (2017-18), Cara debuted in New York City by creating the roles of Mrs. Morcom in Anathema: Alan Mathison Turing at National Sawdust, and Mother Alice in Mary Prescott's immersive chamber opera Alice; she also workshopped Ashley Fure's The Force of Things: An Opera for Objects (Soprano 2, cover) with the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE). In June 2018 she joined Fresh Squeezed Opera for the electroacoustic, genre-exploding Knot An Opera!.

As a close collaborator with interdisciplinary artist Mary Prescott, Cara performed Atlasomnia (April 2018) and Mother Me (May 2018), two brand new site-specific immersive performance art works dealing with the nature of memory, imagination, and the female body at Areté Venue and Gallery in Brooklyn.

In the same year, Cara produced two virtual installments of CARA'S MAP, a game-generated series of musical improvisations for voice, instruments, and found objects released as a daily virtual feed. CARA'S MAP received its live premiere in July 2018 at the Bang on a Can Summer Festival at MASS MoCA, and made its Canadian premiere in August 2018 with (R)evolution: Resonant Bodies at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.

Cara made her Carnegie Hall debut in January 2018 as a First Prize winner of the Crescendo International Competition performing excerpts of Maurice Ravel's Histoires naturelles with pianist Stephen Nguyen.

Cara holds a BM from McGill University (2017), where she sang with the McGill Contemporary Music Ensemble, McGill Digital Composition Studio, Opera McGill, Capella Antica, early music ensembles, and more.

Cara has held administrative positions with International Contemporary Ensemble, the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College, and the Nouveau Classical Project. Cara currently works with the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. She is also a contributing arts critic for The Sybaritic Singer.
